Webinar: Thermal conductive solutions for metal replacement and lightweighting

Thermal management and electrical conductivity are two of the most important factors when it comes to replacing metal with engineering plastics. In absolute values, metals are more conductive materials when compared to plastics. However, with the right part design and adapted formulation, plastics have proven to be an optimal alternative to metal. This decreases the density and allows for more design freedom, without compromising on mechanical properties.

This webinar will present DOMO’s developed knowhow in highly customizable thermal conductive solutions. This has been achieved thanks to the cooperation with NETZSCH concerning the state-of-the-art Laser Flash Apparatus method for measuring thermal conductivity.

The intensive screening of several additives with advanced experimental trials protocols has led to the creation of more than 200 formulations. These have been extensively tested with NETZSCH LFA Hyperflash®.

Our new DOMAMID® Z branded range, which is made of PA6, PA66 and PPS based solutions, meets various customer requirements with optimized costs.

This is thanks to:

  • Appropriate chemical resistance.
  • Adequate fogging behaviour at given temperature levels.
  • Flammability in line with automotive FMVSS302 norms.
  • Adequate mechanical performances.
  • The possibility to choose between electrical insulation or conductivity.
  • Longer component lifetime.
  • Corrosion resistance.

The most significant target applications for these products are fluid and AD BLUE management systems, heat sinks and LED lightings.

DOMAMID® Z can replace aluminium, which allows for weight saving and omits the need for post treatments. It also helps to fulfil the lightweighting challenge in the automotive sector, with a potential saving of a minimum 33% when compared to aluminium. This results in lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which is especially valuable in a car front. Additionally, DOMO conductive solutions offer a lower vibration load when compared to heat dissipating elements in aluminium.

In applications where thermal hot spots issues occur, such as car lighting systems, DOMAMID® Z grants heat dissipation, without the need for expensive metal heat shields.
